The Daily(?) Dose: Playlist: While I Was Away

The Daily Dose: New music every day. It's good for you.

I would stop calling it the Daily Dose if it weren't almost a running joke. Still, apologies for not being consistent. I've assembled a small SoundCloud playlist of 8 songs from the past week to make up for it:
I. "Busy Earnin'," JUNGLE.'s new song, is more upbeat but just as fabulously funky as their earlier tracks "The Heat" and "Lucky I Got What I Want," Good luck getting the opening horn line out of your head.

II. Architecture in Helsinki's new track is characteristically bouncy and cheerful. Like some lost hit blazing out of the 80s, this groove is a must for that miserable drive to work or that upcoming birthday party.

III. SAINT PEPSI keeps churning out Mario Kart Dream Trap with "Baby," from the upcoming EP Gin City

IV. "Charity" is more great Arthur Beatrice from Working Out, which you can stream in full here.

V. Ryan Hemsworth takes on Wave Racer's glittery "Streamers" that in some ways sounds like SAINT PEPSI's signature brand of Mario Kart Dream Trap.

VI. The beginning of Mr Little Jeans's new track is dark and deep––even ominously so. And while it never loses its smoky dissonance, it's so smooth and surprisingly catchy.

VII. "Glass" is from Young & Sick's upcoming self-titled LP due out in April. From the sparse synth groove of the beginning, the song's lyrics aren't exactly cheerful: "'Cause there's a poison in my glass and it's makin' it hard to feel––anythaaang." The lyrics, however, perfectly compliment the off-kilter, scatterbrained beat.

VIII. Finally, "Magic Rain" is probably best described by its SoundCloud tags: Esoteric Bluewave, Monsoon Season, Space House Pop, Flight-Musiq, Idyllic, Beachhaze. Press play, and these nonsense genres will make (slightly) more sense.

The Daily Dose: Arthur Beatrice - "Singles" & "Councillor"

The Daily Dose: New music every day. It's good for you.

In anticipation of the February 24 release of their debut album, Working Out, Arthur Beatrice have released two tracks, "Councillor" and "Singles."  The London-based outfit, which released "Grand Union" to considerable acclaim last year, is definitely worth keeping track of. Stream the two new tracks below and look out for Working Out next week.

The Daily Dose: Big Boi - "Damaged World (feat. Menahan Band)"

The Daily Dose: New music every day. It's good for you.

Generally, I'm not a huge fan of mashups, but Big Boi's recent Mash-Up Mondays series has yielded some great tracks, notably "CPU 2.0" that added serious funk to Big Boi's Phantogram-featuring "CPU" with Sade's "Nothing Can Come Between Us." The most recent addition is a mashup of Big Boi's "Tremendous Damage" with Charles Bradley and Menahan Street Band's "The World (is Going Up in Flames)," and the resulting track, "Damaged World," is great. Stream (and download for free!) the mashup below, and stream the two original songs as well.

Playlist: February 2014: This Feeling Flows Both Ways

It was tough to narrow down this playlist to thirty-some songs given all the good music that's come out in the past few weeks. As always, tracks range from being days old to a few months old, but all have been on heavy rotation for me this past month and are definitely worth listening to. As per usual, most of these songs should be familiar from Daily Doses, though not all: the title track, for instance, is CHVRCHES' upbeat take on Arctic Monkeys' "Do I Wanna Know?" which reinvents the original surprisingly well; the new Bipolar Sunshine track is great and characteristically uplifting; new Tourist is also worth checking out. It's worth noting, too, that the prolific Damon Albarn, frontman of Blur and Gorillaz, is back with "Heavy Seas of Love," a track from his upcoming album Everyday Robots, which is due out April 28. The track is great, especially if you're still suffering from Gorillaz withdrawal. Also, don't forget to grab the few tracks that are available for free. Happy listening.

The Daily (Double) Dose: Twin Shadow; bo en

The Daily (Double) Dose: New music every day (more or less). It's good for you.

Apologies again for the inconsistency ("Why even call it a Daily Dose if you can't put music out daily??"). Here are two tracks to make up for it. Also be on the lookout for a playlist tomorrow.

The first is the last installment of Twin Shadow's fabulous UNDER THE CVRS series, and it's a good one: a slower, slightly darker take on The Smith's "There is a Light that Never Goes Out." Grab a free download via the SoundCloud link below.

The second is a fantastic track from bo en, "Money won't Pay (feat. Augustus)." It's a glittery groove that's incredibly catchy and sure to elevate your mood. Check it out below.

The Daily (Double) Dose: ODESZA; Shlohmo & Jeremih

The Daily (Double) Dose: New music (just about) every day. It's good for you (I promise).

Due to strange weather and high stress, there was no dosage of music yesterday, despite there being a myriad of great new tracks. To restore karmic balance to the universe, here are two fine new tracks––both available for free!

The first, ODESZA's "Sun Models," is characteristic ODESZA, bright and glittering, featuring the chopped up vocals of Madelyn Grant. Grab a free download below.

The second, "No More," sees Shlohmo and Jeremih teaming up again after last year's success "Bo Peep (Do U Right)." Download "No More" via NPR by following the SoundCloud link below.

The Daily Dose: Saol Álainn - "Cis.Cism"

The Daily Dose: New music every day. It's good for you.

Saol Álainn's "Nostroke," which debuted in 2013 was a somewhat off-putting yet fantastic track. Now the AA side, "Cis.Cism" is streaming and, while not without melancholic elements, is decidedly warmer  than the original. Check it out below:

The Daily Dose: New Division - "Honest (feat. Starflyer 59)"

The Daily Dose: New music every day. It's good for you.

After many of their tracks in progress and computer files were unexpectedly corrupted two years ago, California-based New Division is set to release Together We Shine in July of this year. "Honest," a thumping, soaring track that features fellow Californians Starflyer 59, is the latest track from the upcoming album. Stream it below:

The Daily Dose: Phoenix - "SOS in Bel Air (Jackson and His Computerband Remix)"

The Daily Dose: New music every day. It's good for you.

You might not think that a funked-out, thumping, droning, nine-minute-long version of Phoenix's "SOS in Bel Air" would be any good. Jackson Fourgeaud, the Frenchman behind Jackson and His Computerband, might convince you otherwise. It's weird and warped, oscillating between catchy and off-putting; still, from the music-box-like opening to the reverberating finish, it makes for quite an enjoyable ride––and an entirely different track. Grab a free download via SoundCloud below:

The Daily Dose: SKATERS - "Miss Teen Massachusetts (Magic Man Remix)"

The Daily Dose: New music every day. It's good for you.

SKATERS' "Miss Teen Massachusetts," which debuted earlier this year, has received a characteristically synthed-out remix from Magic Man. Check it out below:

The Daily Dose: The National - "Learning" (Perfume Genius Cover)

The Daily Dose: New music every day. It's good for you.

Originally released in 2013 on the Japanese vinyl edition of Trouble Will Find Me, The National's cover of Perfume Genius' "Learning" is now available on iTunes as the B-side of "I Need My Girl." It's the first time I've heard it and Matt Berninger's vocals give it a depth and calmness that's not present in the warbling original.

The Daily Dose: Phantogram - "Bill Murray"

The Daily Dose: New music every day. It's good for you.

This track is a union of two things so fabulous that it's almost obligatory that I post this: Phantogram and Bill Murray. The melancholy track makes no mention of the aging ghostbuster, thus raising the question: Why Bill Murray?

Phantogram's Josh Carter explains, saying that
We named it Bill Murray because we always pictured a sad Bill Murray for the visuals of that song.
Phantogram's upcoming album, Voices, is due out February 18. Stream "Bill Murray" below:

The Daily Dose: Naomi Pilgrim - "Rainmakers"

The Daily Dose: New music every day. It's good for you.

Having already released "No Gun" and "Money," Naomi Pilgrim's debut EP only has one truly new track to offer. "Rainmakers," however, does not disappoint, and Pilgrim's Swedish and Barbadian roots are apparent in this percussive, twisting, sweeping song. As she said herself,
“Rainmakers” makes my heart sing. I get a very nice vibe from it. It’s a different world from the other songs. It’s lovely and is a song about either heartbreak or childhood.
There you have it. Stream "Rainmakers" below:

The Daily Dose: Young Fathers - "DIP"

The Daily Dose: New music every day. It's good for you.

The beginning of "DIP" is rather unsettling with its jarring "lurnin an lurnin chahlie" and ominous background humming. But the track, from Edinburgh-based Young Fathers's (Alloysious Massaquoi, Kayus Bankole, and G Hastings) new album DEAD, only gets better. It escalates, spiritual, prophetic, strange, hopeful, the mmmm mmmhmm mmm mmmmmm making it both gritty and sublime, mournful and soulful. I can't stop playing it; check it out below:
