The Daily Dose: alt-j
New music every day. "It's good for you!"

Alt-j are back with their second single since last month's Miley-sampling, French-crooning "Hunger of the Pine." If anyone thought the Cambridge outfit were heading in a new direction with "Hunger of the Pine," "Left Hand Free" would seem to provide definitive confirmation. But not so fast: according to a Guardian interview, the track was intentionally written to be "the least Alt-J song ever," so it's likely anomalous instead of part of a larger trend. Abandoning the surreal quality of 2012's An Awesome Wave completely, "Left Hand Free" is a lo-fi rock-'n'-roll track that, though not without some characteristic quirkiness, is a stylistic departure from what we've come to expect from the band. This Is All Yours is out September 22 and is available for pre-order here.
