The Weekly What 7•14•14
"A playlist every Sunday?!"

At best, posting on this site has been sporadic over the past two weeks. Due to some personal matters, it's been difficult to do more than repost tracks over on SoundCloud. In light of this lack of music, here's a 10-track-long Weekly playlist of songs from the past week or two that were never properly introduced. Enjoy!

1. "Gold Silver Diamond" is a near-perfect piece of sun-kissed indie pop. As delightful as its title suggests, the track from New Orleans duo Generationals is refreshingly cheery without being kitschy or glitzy.

2. The latest taste of Afie Jurvanen's upcoming album, Bahamas Is Afie, goes down smoothly. A straightforward message of encouragement that swells softly with organs and marches confidently to its own predictability, "Stronger Than That" is a fine track because it never strains to be more than what it needs to be: a groove that's as solid as its lyrics urge us to be. Bahamas Is Afie is out August 19.

3. After topping the UK charts by providing the vocals to Oliver Heldens' "Gecko (Overdrive)," Becky Hill is back with "Caution to the Wind." Though not the club staple of "Gecko," the track is deftly produced and impressively sung.

4. Deptford Goth's remix of f y f e's "For You," which was released this Spring, is a gorgeous bit of reimagining. Transforming the original sax solo into an expressive and hypnotic echo, this remix is a fabulous example of a rework that manages to step boldly out from beneath the shadow of its source.

5. Dawn Golden (aka Dexter Tortoriello)'s recent album Still Life, is a mind-numbingly and beautifully constructed album;  "Last Train" is certainly no exception. Daktyl repurposes the track wonderfully; a mind-bending piece of house-infused music, his take on "Last Train" loses the profundity of the original but more than makes up for it in inventiveness and style.

6. "Orchid Bloom" is taken from Lemonade's upcoming LP Minus Tide, out September 9 on Cascine Records. The band describes Minus Tide as "a collection of tracks that contemplate the sync of natural cycles, the allure of wide open spaces and the belief that freedom can be experienced within the confining grids of urban life." Which all sounds rather meaningless until you listen to the track, which manages to be both organic and urban at once.

7. This track came out about a year ago (at least I think so; this is the first I've heard of it), but it's too good not to share. Grab yourself a free download of this lovelily rendered a cappella track here.

8. Thanks to Papasquiaro, a recent playlist from the wonderful people at Club Fonograma, I give you Capullo's "Orientación Vocacional" ("Career Guidance"). The hazy track shuffles at a pleasant pace, with whimsical lyrics like "I know it's hard to believe / I folded a spoon / It's that we aren't accustomed" adding to its dreaminess.

9. London three-piece JUCE have released a swelteringly funky track in "Burning Up." It's the perfect song for embracing the summer heat, particularly if you happen to be in London.

10. Australian producer Flume rarely disappoints. Flume's remix of Chet Faker's "Gold" lacks the soulful minimalism of the original but his use of otherworldly synths and vocals introduce a mantric fullness to the track.
